Special Needs Camp at Camp Tekoa
Overnight camps are of paramount importance for individuals with special needs as they offer a transformative environment where participants can develop social skills, forge friendships, and gain a sense of independence. Through adapted programming and an inclusive atmosphere, these camps empower individuals to engage in outdoor activities, learn life skills, and cultivate self-confidence.
The structured routines and positive role models contribute to cognitive and emotional growth while also providing caregivers with respite. By fostering a sense of belonging and achievement, overnight camps create a platform for personal growth, empowerment, and cherished memories that extend far beyond the camp experience.
Camp Tekoa offers special needs camps, called Barnabas Camps, to adults with developmental disabilities. Barnabas is known for showing great kindness to Saul (apostle Paul), and his Hebrew name translates to “son of encouragement.” We hope to extend such encouragement and kindness to our Barnabas campers just as they encourage us.
Campers are to be ambulatory and must be able to feed, bathe, and clothe themselves. Campers enjoy activities such as boating, hiking, zipline, arts and crafts, devotions, and talent show performances. Each camper is partnered with a special friend who remains by their side throughout the week, offering them encouragement and care for eating, sleeping, and all the fun in between.
