In Appreciation of James Johnson

It is with sadness, and deep gratitude and appreciation of his service, that the Board of Trustees of Camp Tekoa announces the resignation of Executive Director Rev. James Johnson, effective October 28. James has served Camp Tekoa well, through many years and many changes, and has helped Camp Tekoa continue in the mission of Touching Hearts, Changing Lives, and Sharing the Light of Christ.

James served on summer staff at Camp Tekoa in 1989 and 1990, and returned to serve as Director in 1997. He and his wife Jerrilyn, as well as their children Baden, AJ, Lewis, and Kayla, have been an integral part of Camp Tekoa, serving in many capacities. The Johnson Family is beloved by many Tekoans, and will be deeply missed.

James has led Camp Tekoa in many important changes and improvements over the years. Under his leadership, Camp Tekoa has added the afterschool program "Let's Grow Outside", the Adventure Base, three new cabins, and has grown its ministry to include Tekoa Foothills in Casar, NC. James is quick to acknowledge these things would not have been possible without the staff, campers, and volunteers who make Camp Tekoa so special.

The Johnsons will be moving to Estes Park, Colorado where James has accepted a position at a Salvation Army camp that works with rural and inner-city kids.

A reception honoring James will be held at Camp Tekoa in Hendersonville on October 26. For those who cannot attend the reception, you are welcome to write notes of encouragement sharing love and thanks, stories, and well-wishes to James and his family.  You may write these notes in the form linked below or hand written notes can be mailed to Camp Tekoa, Att: (PO Box 1793, Flat Rock, NC 28731-1793) and the notes will be delivered to James.

Throughout this season of change, the Camp Tekoa staff continue to prepare for an exciting 2020 camping season. Be on the lookout for updates about new adventures in Hendersonville and Casar!

The Board of Trustees, on behalf of so many campers and alumni, express our best wishes to James and Jerrilyn and their family as they move into their next adventure. May you all continue to Share the Light of Christ.
