Spending time outdoors is crucial for kids' physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Outdoor activities provide opportunities for exercise, fresh air, and exposure to sunlight, all of which are important for maintaining good health. Being in nature can also help to reduce stress, improve mood, increase focus, and improve cognitive development.
Outdoor play allows kids to be creative and use their imaginations while offering them a chance to take risks and challenge themselves in a safe and supportive environment. It can also foster a love and appreciation for the natural world, which helps kids become better stewards of the earth.
Children are being inundated with technology at every turn and spending more and more time indoors. As screen time increases for most young people, so does the knowledge and research regarding the negative repercussions of this trend. Experts continue to see how vitally important it is to unplug from our devices in favor of being outdoors and connecting face-to-face with others.
Overall, spending time outside is a valuable and essential aspect of a child's development and should be encouraged and incorporated into their daily routines. Participating in an outdoor summer camp program is a great way for kids to build social skills and make new friends while unplugging and reaping the many benefits of time spent in nature.

Because of Asheville’s location in the Blue Ridge Mountains, there is plenty of natural beauty and countless kid-friendly outdoor adventures. There are also a number of amazing summer camps which take advantage of the idyllic setting by offering activities such as hiking, mountain biking, challenge courses, and boating.
Camp Tekoa, located in Hendersonville, NC, has the following summer programs, which are specifically designed with Elementary school students in mind:
Elementary Day Camp (ages 5-8)
Elementary day campers are divided, based on their age, into co-ed groups of approximately 12-14 campers and are led by two or more staff members. Activities include nature hikes, scavenger hunts, devotions, arts and crafts, games, campfire songs, and zip lines.
Adventure Day Camp (ages 9-11)
Older day campers will participate in additional activities not available to the younger age groups, including tree climbing and an offsite waterfall trip.
Elementary Mini Overnight Camp (ages 7-9)
This session is a shortened version of our weeklong elementary resident camp. This four-day, three-night camp is a fun introduction for our first-time or younger campers. Activities are designed with group interaction in mind so that campers are encouraged to make friends with other group members and stay busy from morning to night.
Elementary Overnight Camp (ages 8-11)
Our Elementary TKO Campers are the youngest age group to participate in our high adventure challenge elements. Some of these elements include the tree climb and our 350-foot lake zipline.
